How Figma Built a Product OS that saved PMs 2 hours a day
And how you can build your own version. Plus 15+ examples of other new internal AI tools from companies like Pinterest, Airbnb and more.
🔒DoP Deep goes deeper into the concepts and ideas that are covered in the Weekly Briefing to help you learn lessons from the experiences of top tech companies. If you’d like to upgrade to receive these in-depth pieces of analysis you can upgrade below. New reports are added every month.
Claude Code’s creator, Boris Cherny, predicts that the future of product development will involve 5 new distinct roles:
The shift towards some of these types of roles is already showing up in survey data. A recent survey from Figma found that 60% of developers now say they’re participating in design work and 41% of designers say they’re participating in development - almost double the rate in 2025.
As the operating rhythms of product teams start to change, leading companies are now scrambling to build internal tools that reflect this speed of change.
Internal tooling is one of the most interesting areas of AI disruption right now because they serve as case studies that allow us to explore how companies are adapting their operating processes to accommodate changing work patterns and leveraging new emerging technologies that may eventually make their way to real users, too.
We’ve previously covered how Ramp built its own sophisticated internal tool, Glass, and how Uber built a PRD checker and in this Deep Dive, we’re going to take a look at the latest new internal tool that product teams are interested in: a tool that Figma calls “PM OS”.
We’ll break the operating system down into distinct pieces and give you practical prompts and skills you can use to build your own version of the same system at your company. As well as this, we’ll explore examples of other new internal AI tools and operating systems from some of the world’s leading companies including Airbnb, Asana, Airbnb, Pinterest and others that you can use as inspiration.

What Figma built; how Product OS works - and how you can build your own version
Figma’s PM OS is an internal AI system Figma’s product team built for their PMs. It’s a GitHub-based collection of reusable skills, shared context files, and profile data that helps PMs cut down on coordination busywork and spend more time on actual strategy and product decisions.
Here’s a snapshot of what it is and how it works:
PM work at Figma was scattered across Slack, docs, FigJam, Figma itself, task trackers, and spreadsheets. PMs were spending big chunks of their day just piecing together what had changed and what mattered, often starting the morning with a Slack-catchup block before they could do any real work.
